Dr. Ally Louks has opened up about the overwhelming aftermath of going viral — and the intense backlash that followed her academic achievement.

The 28-year-old researcher, who earned a PhD in olfactory ethics — exploring the “politics of smell” in modern and contemporary literature — said a simple celebratory post in late 2024 quickly spiraled into something far bigger than she anticipated.

“I was generally a pretty offline person,” Louks said, explaining she originally used social media mainly to stay connected with others in her academic field during the pandemic. Sharing a photo with her completed thesis was meant for colleagues — but instead, it garnered more than 130 million views and ignited widespread debate online.

While many users congratulated her, Louks said the attention also drew sharp criticism.

“It became a locus for the culture wars,” she explained, recalling how some detractors went as far as labeling her “the face of tyranny.”

For more than a week, she said, the reaction was relentless. “It was a very intense week of my life. I didn’t get very much sleep,” Louks shared, noting she was balancing teaching responsibilities alongside a part-time job instructing exercise classes at the time.

Despite the backlash, Louks maintained a measured perspective. She acknowledged that her field — examining the social and cultural significance of smell — may not be immediately understood by many.

“It’s not something people tend to think about very often,” she said, adding that some criticism came from a place of confusion rather than hostility.

Still, she drew a line between curiosity and unproductive anger. “There was also a contingent of people who were just angry about everything in a way that was not productive at all,” she noted.

Her work focuses on how smell shapes identity, relationships and cultural perception, challenging the idea that scent is purely instinctive.

According to Louks, society teaches individuals how to interpret and respond to smell, giving it deeper social meaning.

In an unexpected turn, the viral moment also opened new doors. Louks said she has since become a go-to voice in online discussions about smell, with users frequently tagging her for insight.

“It’s been a really positive part of my life, despite the way that it started,” she said.

Looking back, she describes the experience with a sense of gratitude. The exposure, she said, created opportunities to share her expertise and connect with a wider audience — even as she navigated the challenges of sudden internet fame.

Louks is now working on a book titled Under Your Nose, expected to be published in spring 2027, as she continues to encourage people to think differently about a sense often overlooked.

“I’m really just here to educate people and have conversations,” she said, emphasizing her approach to online discourse. “I’m not interested in arguing with strangers on the internet.”
