Netflix enters talks to buy historic Radford Studio Center lot
Netflix seeks new production space as its Sunset Bronson Studios lease expires
Netflix is in advanced negotiations to acquire the Radford Studio Centre in Studio City as the streaming giant nears the end of its ten-year lease at Sunset Bronson Studios.
Industry sources confirmed on Tuesday that the streamer is discussing a potential purchase with lenders led by Goldman Sachs.
The move follows the repossession of the property from Hackman Capital Partners, which defaulted on $1.1 billion of debt.
While Hackman originally purchased the lot for $1.85 billion in 2021, reports suggest Netflix could secure the site for a fraction of that price, with figures cited as low as $400 million to $600 million.
The 55-acre Radford campus is nearly a century old and holds a prestigious place in television history, having hosted iconic productions such as Seinfeld and The Mary Tyler Moore Show.
More recently, the property served as the headquarters for CBS Studio Centre before its sale to Hackman.
Although ambitious billion-dollar renovation plans were unveiled in 2023 to modernise the soundstages and infrastructure, the project stalled due to shifting financial climates and declining occupancy.
For Netflix, the acquisition represents a strategic shift toward property ownership rather than traditional leasing.
The company is already developing a major studio hub at Fort Monmouth in New Jersey, and securing the Radford "hit factory" would provide a permanent production base in Los Angeles.
If the deal is finalised, it would mark one of the most significant real estate transitions in Hollywood since the pandemic, providing Netflix with twenty-two historic soundstages to bolster its original content slate.
