Palantir has secured a $300 million agreement with the US Department of Agriculture, which plans to leverage the software firm’s technology for farmland management amid rising geopolitical tensions affecting global supply lines.

This deal expands on the ongoing initiatives with the USDA and highlights Palantir's increasing presence in US government operations, moving beyond defense contracts that focus on military advancements.

American farmers are contending with increasing supply costs amidst a prolonged trade conflict involving the US and key trading partners such as China, a major buyer of soybeans, which disrupted the market significantly late last year.

In December, President Donald Trump declared a $12 billion aid plan to assist farmers affected by the trade tensions.

However, the escalating gas prices due to the conflict in Iran further intensified the challenges, resulting in increased fertilizer costs stemming from transport issues.

Consequently, many farmers are forced to reevaluate their production choices, putting the supply chain at risk.

Recent purchases of American farmland by China have come under scrutiny from both Washington and foreign policy analysts.

A recent report by the Foundation for Defense of Democracies encouraged the USDA to amend the reporting requirements "embedded within the Agricultural Foreign Investment Disclosure Act (AFIDA) to stop China and other adversarial nations from using commercial land purchases to gain a strategic edge over the United States."

The USDA's alliance with Palantir signals its aim to tackle this concern by utilizing the company's technological solutions.

Established in 2003 in response to 9/11, Palantir's CEO Alex Karp has consistently emphasised the company's mission to aid US military operations.

The firm's AI-driven Maven Smart System platform has recently gained attention, having been used by the US armed forces in Iran.

Nonetheless, Palantir has also been met with significant criticism over its contracts with US Immigration and Customs Enforcement and the Department of Homeland Security, with reports suggesting their technology is employed for monitoring US citizens.

Karp has not shied away from addressing these controversies or confronting short sellers who wager against the company’s stock.

After experiencing a dramatic surge that boosted the stock price more than 25 times from 2022 to the end of 2025, Palantir's stock value has decreased by 18% this year.
