Teyana Taylor opens up about bond with Janet Jackson after years of admiration

Teyana Taylor has revealed she has formed a “close bond” with her longtime idol Janet Jackson, describing the global pop icon as a “beautiful spirit” who has played a meaningful role in her life and career.

The actress and musician, now 35, grew up admiring Jackson and first connected with her in an unforgettable moment back in 2017. 

After Taylor missed the chance to attend one of Jackson’s concerts due to a cancelled flight, she shared her disappointment online, prompting an unexpected response.

Jackson reached out via FaceTime, surprising Taylor in what became an emotional introduction. 

“I had my Janet shirt on that I’d slept in and everything. Of course I cried,” Taylor recalled, describing the moment as surreal.

The pair later met in person in 2022 when Jackson attended one of Taylor’s performances in London. 

Since then, their relationship has evolved into a genuine friendship, with Taylor noting how the connection still feels extraordinary despite its closeness.

“It’s kind of crazy because now she’s like my homegirl in real life. I call her Jan,” Taylor said, adding that she remains a devoted fan even as their bond has deepened.

Beyond friendship, Jackson has also had a significant influence on Taylor’s professional journey. 

After stepping away from music in 2020, Taylor revealed that Jackson offered guidance and encouragement that ultimately contributed to her return to the industry.

“She poured into me and gave me some really good advice. She played a big part in why I came back,” Taylor shared.

Their mutual admiration was recently on display when Taylor paid tribute to Jackson by recreating one of her iconic looks for a magazine feature. 

Furthermore, the homage inspired by a military-style outfit worn during Jackson’s 1990s tour earned high praise from the legendary performer.
