Henry Winkler laughs about 'Bronze Fonz' statue being taller than him
The statue honours his 'Happy Days' character in Milwaukee
Henry Winkler has poked fun at his iconic Milwaukee tribute statue, joking that the famous “Bronze Fonz” is one thing in his life that still “pisses me off” — all because of its height.
The Happy Days star, 80, made the lighthearted comment during an appearance on Today with Jenna & Sheinelle on Wednesday, April 22, while reflecting on the statue of his beloved character Arthur Fonzarelli, also known as “the Fonz.”
“You know what pisses me off?” Winkler said with a laugh. “He’s taller! He’s taller than I am. I don’t look him in the eye.”
Despite the joke, Winkler was quick to praise the bronze tribute, which has stood in downtown Milwaukee since 2008 and was created by sculptor Gerald P. Sawyer.
The statue celebrates his breakout role on Happy Days, which became a defining part of television history.
“But what a thing in your life,” he added. “People told me I would never achieve, and I have a statue. And a cool one — a tall one.”
The actor has long maintained a close relationship with Milwaukee, the city that served as the backdrop for the classic sitcom. In 2025, city officials even declared October 30 “Henry Winkler Day” in honor of his 80th birthday and enduring cultural impact.
Winkler previously shared a tribute video thanking the city, saying he feels deeply connected to both Milwaukee and the statue itself.
He also revealed that he makes a point of visiting the monument whenever he is in town.
“Who would think in their life they would have a statue of their favorite character in their most wonderful city?” he said at the time. “I can’t wait to see you soon.”
Beyond the humor, Winkler has often reflected on the lasting legacy of Happy Days, crediting the role of the Fonz with transforming his career.
