Nicole Kidman disclosed her unique parenting tip for her two teenage daughters.

The 58-year-old actress discussed her parenting methods with Hoda Kotb at the live HISTORYTalks speaker event in Philadelphia on April 18.

Nicole, alongside her ex-husband Keith Urban, is raising daughters Sunday Rose, 17, and Faith Margaret, 15, and she insists they do one daily activity: give her a hug.

“My daughters might not be thrilled that I'm sharing this, but I tell them, ‘You have to give me a hug for two minutes every day,' ” Nicole admitted with a chuckle.

"It triggers certain chemicals in the body, and we all need a daily two-minute hug. Were you aware of that?” the Big Little Lies actress mentioned.

Nicole, who also shares daughter Bella, 33, and son Connor, 31, with her former partner Tom Cruise, stated that she finds parenting teenagers to be a wonderful experience, contrary to popular belief.

“We're incredibly tight-knit, the three of us, and we discuss everything,” she explained.

“That often involves sitting on the edge of their bed when they say, ‘Come sit here.’ Even if you're exhausted, you go in and listen. I often ask, ‘Would you like my advice now, or are you just venting?’ ” Nicole shared.

"Most times, they tell me not to offer advice," she revealed with laughter. “About 90% of the time.”

Nicole also shared lessons from her own mother, Janelle Ann Kidman, that she wishes to pass on to her children.

“[My mom] advised me, ‘Never let anyone break your spirit,’ ” Nicole said.

“She lived in an era where she couldn't pursue the career she desired. She raised us, supported my father, assisted him in earning his Ph.D., but never got her own … and she was incredibly intelligent,” Nicole continued.

Nicole added, “In some ways, my sister — who's now a lawyer and mother of six — and I are promoting what she instilled in us by sharing it with the world.”

Nicole mentioned she owes her mother, who was a nurse, for inspiring her to nurture her creative side at a time when she contemplated leaving the entertainment industry in 2008.

“I relocated to Nashville, I was expecting, and I had my daughter [Sunday Rose], and I was considering stepping away," she said.

“My mom encouraged me, saying, ‘I wouldn’t give it up entirely. You've been doing this since childhood. It's part of your essence.’ And thankfully, she did,” Nicole noted.

Nicole also mentioned that her parents emphasised the significance of “serving others” and lending a helping hand, which she believes is “the greatest gift they offered.”

“Growing up in a family committed to social justice and care for others has, I hope, influenced my daughters,” she continued.

Nicole’s father, Dr. Antony Kidman, passed away in 2014, and she lost her mother in 2024.
