  • Taylor Swift reconstructed the 10-minute version of the song using fragments from her diaries.
  • The original 2012 rehearsal recording was lost, requiring a full lyrical restoration in 2021.
  • The All Too Well short film earned Taylor Swift a Grammy Award for Best Music Video in 2023.

Taylor Swift has opened up about the arduous journey of recreating "All Too Well (10-Minute Version)," a track that has become a cornerstone of her discography.

In an interview with The New York Times Magazine, the singer-songwriter reflected on the emotional state she was in following her Speak Now tour when the song was first conceived.

The original version began as a ten-minute "rambling rant" during a rehearsal, which a sound technician managed to capture after being prompted by Swift's mother.

However, Swift admitted that she initially considered it a "mistake" to speak publicly about the existence of the long-form version.

This revelation led to a decade of fan requests for the extended track, despite Swift no longer possessing the original recording.

To fulfil the demand for 2021's Red (Taylor's Version), she had to embark on what she described as "the most extensive restoration process" of her career.

"I was looking through safes trying to find the CD, but I had to go back and piece together lyrics and stuff" from her personal diaries, she explained.

The process involved refining "angry, scathing parts" to make the final product more palatable while maintaining the raw detail that fans loved.

The effort proved highly successful; the extended version debuted at number one on the Billboard Hot 100, and its accompanying short film won the 2023 Grammy for Best Music Video.

Reflecting on the project, Swift noted that she likely will never experience such a complex lyrical reconstruction again, marking the track as a singular achievement in her ongoing mission to reclaim her masters.
