King Charles has made a rare and emotional reflection on his own mortality, telling supporters in New York that he “will not see the long-distance future” during a speech at a major charity event.

The monarch spoke at Christie's auction house during a “Greater Together” gathering held as part of his ongoing state visit to the United States.

The event marked 50 years since he founded The King’s Trust, which focuses on supporting young people through education, employment and entrepreneurship initiatives.

Addressing guests, King Charles expressed gratitude for those continuing the organisation’s mission, saying he would not personally witness the long-term future of its impact but hoped others would carry it forward.

The evening drew a high-profile guest list, including fashion figures Anna Wintour, Ralph Lauren, Stella McCartney and Donatella Versace, alongside performers and supporters of the charity.

Singer Lionel Richie, a global ambassador for the Trust, introduced the King to the audience.

During his remarks, Charles also acknowledged the significance of reaching the Trust’s 50-year milestone, describing its early years as challenging before it grew into a globally recognised initiative that has supported thousands of young people and helped launch successful businesses.

The King’s comments come amid his ongoing treatment for an undisclosed form of cancer, first identified in 2024.

Buckingham Palace has previously confirmed that the condition is not prostate cancer, though details have not been made public.

Despite his health challenges, Charles has continued to carry out official duties, balancing treatment with public engagements at home and abroad.
