Met Gala 2026 unveils ‘Costume Art’ theme and dress code
The event will coincide with a new Costume Institute exhibition at the Met
Met Gala 2026 is set to return on May 4, 2026, with a new theme and dress code that place fashion firmly in dialogue with fine art.
According to USA Today, this year’s event will center on the theme “Costume Art,” paired with the dress code “fashion is art,” setting the stage for one of the most concept-driven red carpets in the gala’s history.
The annual benefit, held at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, raises funds for the institution’s Costume Institute and coincides with the opening of its latest exhibition.
The 2026 edition also marks the debut of the new Condé Nast Galleries space within the museum.
In addition, the “Costume Art” theme is designed to explore the relationship between clothing and the human body, positioning fashion as both wearable design and artistic expression.
The accompanying exhibition will examine what curators describe as “the dressed body,” pairing garments with artworks from across the museum’s extensive collection.
Moreover, the goal is to highlight how fashion and art interact across more than 5,000 years of visual culture.
Organizers say the show aims to emphasize the Costume Institute’s unique ability to place contemporary fashion within a broader historical and artistic context, bridging modern design with classical and historical works.
The exhibition is scheduled to open on May 10, 2026, and will run through January 10, 2027, extending the Met Gala’s influence far beyond its single night of red-carpet spectacle.
While celebrities, designers, and stylists are expected to interpret the theme in highly creative ways, the museum has acknowledged that the final looks may vary widely from the official concept.
