On Monday, Shaquille Taylor pleaded guilty to second-degree murder regarding the 2023 shooting death of 18-year-old college student Jillian Ludwig.

According to reports from WKRN, FOX 17, and WSMV, Taylor was originally facing a capital murder charge before accepting a plea deal.

He was subsequently sentenced to 38 years in prison, a term that also covers a guilty plea for aggravated assault from a separate criminal case.

The tragedy occurred on November 7, 2023, while Miss Ludwig was walking on a track at Edgehill Community Memorial Gardens Park in Nashville.

Police alleged that Taylor was firing at a vehicle when a stray bullet struck the student in the head. Miss Ludwig, a New Jersey native and bass player at Belmont University, died shortly after.

During the hearing, her mother, Jessica Ludwig, stated, "My daughter lost her whole life, her whole bright, beautiful and promising future at only age 18. He deserves to lose the rest of his."

Her father, Matt Ludwig, acknowledged that while the act was unintentional, the consequences necessitated a life behind bars.

"I have some sympathy for him. I do … but he needs to be in jail forever," he remarked. The case had previously been delayed by hearings regarding Taylor's mental competency, but a judge ultimately ruled he was fit to stand trial.

Following this tragedy, Tennessee passed "Jillian’s Law" to ensure the involuntary commitment of individuals found incompetent for trial in violent felony cases. Miss Ludwig is remembered by her university as a passionate and gifted musician.
