Billie Eilish credits childhood injury for redirecting her path to global stardom
The 'Lovely' hitmaker Eilish reflects on how pain and recovery led her to discover her true path
Billie Eilish has reflected on a pivotal moment from her childhood, revealing how a painful hip injury unexpectedly set her on the path to global music stardom.
The 24-year-old singer shared the story during an appearance on Good Hang with Amy Poehler, where she recalled that her original ambition was to become a professional dancer.
That dream, however, was abruptly cut short during a rehearsal for her first major competition.
Eilish described how the injury occurred in the final moments of practice. What began as a routine run-through quickly turned into a life-altering incident when her hip gave out mid-performance, leaving her unable to continue.
The setback proved severe, with the singer revealing she was bedridden for days and later relied on crutches during recovery.
“I literally never danced again,” she said, describing how the injury forced her to abandon a passion she had pursued from a young age.
Yet, the same period marked the unexpected beginning of her music career. Around that time, Eilish and her brother Finneas O'Connell had uploaded their song Ocean Eyes to SoundCloud, initially intended as a track for a dance routine.
The song quickly began gaining traction online, drawing attention from industry professionals and leading to early meetings with record labels and agents, all while Eilish was still recovering from her injury.
Looking back, the Grammy-winning artist now sees the difficult experience in a different light.
What once felt like a devastating setback ultimately redirected her focus and opened the door to a career that would define her future.
“When you think something is ruining your life, and it’s really actually saving your life,” she reflected.
