In an era of overwhelming health information, a new initiative focuses on addressing the most pressing medical concerns regarding GLP-1 receptor agonists.

On Wednesday, Dr Narendra BS, lead consultant in endocrinology at Aster Whitefield Hospital, Bengaluru, provided expert clarity on medications such as Ozempic, Mounjaro, and Wegovy.

While these are often hailed as "miracle" shots, they present unique considerations for the Indian population. Dr Narendra, who brings 11 years of experience, noted that "the goal is to provide clarity, comfort, and clinically-backed solutions" for those navigating these treatments.

Long-term risks and considerations

The use of these medications provides effective treatment but carries potential risks when used for extended periods:

  • Persistent gastrointestinal symptoms such as nausea and vomiting.
  • Delayed gastric emptying affects overall nutrition.
  • Increased risk of developing gallstones and gallbladder disease.
  • Minor risk of pancreatitis among individuals with existing risk factors.
  • Potential muscle loss and fatigue due to suppressed protein intake.

The role of physical activity

To counter the loss of muscle and bone density, experts advocate for a structured approach to fitness:

  • Engage in resistance exercise at least three times a week.
  • Focus on weight-bearing activities to stimulate bone development.
  • Prioritise protein-rich foods like pulses, dairy, eggs, or lean meats.
  • Monitor bone density periodically, especially for those over 40.

Dr Narendra emphasised that "the most effective way to counter muscle and bone loss that occurs during weight loss with GLP-1 medications is through strength training."

He further explained that "the medications should be regarded as elements of chronic disease management," requiring permanent lifestyle adjustments.
