Tony Awards snub Kim Kardashian’s high-profile Broadway producing debut
Joe Mantello’s production emerged as the most recognised play of the 2025-2026 season
- The Fear of 13, co-produced by Kim Kardashian, missed out on major 2026 Tony nominations.
- Despite Broadway debuts from Adrien Brody and Tessa Thompson, the play was overlooked in acting categories.
- Tony voters favoured critically acclaimed musicals The Lost Boys and Schmigadoon! over celebrity-led projects.
The 2026 Tony Award nominations have delivered a clear message to Hollywood: celebrity association does not guarantee Broadway gold.
When the nominations were announced on Tuesday by Uzo Aduba and Darren Criss, one of the most talked-about "snubs" was The Fear of 13, the prison drama that marked Kim Kardashian’s debut as a Broadway producer.
Despite Kardashian’s significant platform and the show’s star power—featuring Academy Award winner Adrien Brody and Tessa Thompson in their own Broadway debuts—the production was entirely overlooked in the major categories of Best Play, Best Lead Actor, and Best Lead Actress.
While the play received minor nods for technical achievements in lighting and sound design, it failed to break into the competitive upper tier dominated by The Lost Boys and Schmigadoon!.
Industry observers noted that while Kardashian’s involvement brought "much-needed light" to the play’s themes of criminal justice reform, Tony voters leaned heavily toward productions with broader critical momentum.
Kardashian was not the only high-profile figure to be left out; Proof, a revival produced by former President Barack Obama, also failed to garner nominations for its celebrity cast.
This "Hollywood shutout" underscores a season where the American Theatre Wing prioritised artistic innovation over red-carpet influence.
As the Broadway community prepares for the awards ceremony on June 7, the conversation remains focused on whether the "Kardashian effect" can still drive ticket sales even without the validation of a Tony nomination.
