Matt Damon returns as Brett Kavanaugh in ‘SNL’ Cold Open featuring Pete Hegseth and Kash Patel
The May 9 episode of 'SNL’ marked the penultimate installment of the current season
Saturday Night Live opened its May 9 episode with a satirical cold open featuring Matt Damon reprising his role as Brett Kavanaugh in a sketch centered on a boozy night out in Washington, D.C.
The sketch was set at Martin's Tavern and brought together three fictionalized versions of prominent figures in President Donald Trump’s orbit.
Cast member Colin Jost portrayed Pete Hegseth, while host Aziz Ansari returned for a second consecutive week as Kash Patel.
Throughout the sketch, the trio joked about their powerful government roles and their affinity for alcohol. Damon’s Kavanaugh boasted about recent court decisions, while Jost’s Hegseth joked about his unexpected rise from weekend television personality to head of the US military.
Ansari’s Patel added to the absurdity with jokes about a fictional FBI-branded bourbon and rumors surrounding his leadership style.
The sketch ended with Kavanaugh claiming that Trump had found the original Constitution and amended it to allow a third presidential term.
Damon first portrayed Kavanaugh during the 2018 season premiere, in a widely praised parody of the justice’s Senate confirmation testimony.
The May 9 episode marked the penultimate installment of the current season, with Damon promoting his upcoming film The Odyssey and Noah Kahan serving as musical guest.
