North Carolina teen and man face murder charges after parents and grandmother found shot dead
The suspects were later arrested in Tennessee after being located in a hotel room
A 16-year-old girl and a 28-year-old man have been arrested and charged in connection with the fatal shooting of three family members at a home in North Carolina, authorities said.
Star Grant, 16, and Devan Loving, 28, are each facing charges of first-degree murder and felony conspiracy to commit murder following the deaths of three relatives in Fairview, Buncombe County.
According to the Buncombe County Sheriff's Office, deputies conducted a welfare check at a family residence on Thursday, May 7, at around 7:15 p.m., where they discovered Travis Grant, 41, Kimberly Grant, 42, and 66-year-old Sharon Grant dead from gunshot wounds.
Officials said the victims were believed to have been dead for several days before being found, after earlier welfare checks on May 4 and May 6 did not result in forced entry due to a lack of immediate evidence of danger.
Star Grant, the daughter of Travis and Kimberly Grant, was not at the scene when authorities arrived.
She was later located the following day in Gatlinburg, Tennessee, inside a hotel room alongside Loving, after police traced a vehicle linked to the teen.
The pair were taken into custody by Gatlinburg Police and the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation, with authorities confirming that investigative interviews conducted after their arrest led to formal murder charges.
Prosecutors have confirmed that Star Grant is being charged as an adult.
Law enforcement officials have not publicly confirmed the nature of the relationship between the two suspects, and a motive for the killings remains under investigation.
Relatives of the Grant family told investigators that Star had allegedly been involved with an older man who communicated with her in secret, though authorities have not confirmed whether that individual is Loving.
Court records reported by local outlets indicate that Star was adopted by Travis Grant in 2019.
Authorities also stated that the investigation is ongoing, including determining the exact time of death, which has not yet been confirmed by the medical examiner.
The case has prompted an extradition process from Tennessee back to North Carolina, where both suspects are expected to face court proceedings.
Officials with the Buncombe County Sheriff’s Office described the investigation as complex and emotionally difficult, expressing condolences to the victims’ family while praising law enforcement teams for their work in bringing the suspects into custody.
