Three police officers were injured during an hours-long armed standoff with a gunman in Syracuse, New York, that ended with the suspect in custody, authorities said.

The incident began just after 10 a.m. on Saturday, May 9, when the Syracuse Police Department reported active shots fired in the area known as “The Bricks” near Tyler Court.

Officials immediately urged the public to avoid the area as officers responded to the scene.

In early updates, police described the situation as “very active,” warning that the suspect was continuing to fire at responding officers.

Residents nearby were instructed to shelter in place as tactical units worked to contain the threat.

By approximately 4:30 p.m., authorities confirmed the suspect had been taken into custody, stating there was no longer any threat to the public. However, the scene remained active as investigators processed evidence.

Syracuse Police Chief Mark Rusin told local media that two officers were shot in the arm, while a third officer suffered a hand injury during the exchange of gunfire.

All three were transported to nearby hospitals with non-life-threatening injuries.

Two of the injured officers were later discharged the same day, while one remained hospitalized for further treatment.

The suspect, whose identity has not yet been released, also received medical attention at the scene before being transported to the hospital.

Authorities said the Onondaga County District Attorney’s Office is considering multiple charges, including attempted murder, assault, and criminal weapons possession. An arraignment is expected to follow as early as Sunday, May 10.

Officials credited responding officers for bringing the situation under control after hours of confrontation, which unfolded in a densely populated area of the city.
