Fugitive 'David Beckham' arrested in New York: Romanian thief part of organised crime group
International fugitive 'David Beckham' arrested in New York for a diamond heist
An international fugitive nicknamed 'David Beckham' has been arrested in New York following an £8,000 diamond heist.
Investigators used advanced facial recognition to identify the suspect, who is believed to be part of a larger criminal network, and are now hunting for his accomplice.
A celebrity, but not a soccer player
An international thief who used the alias “David Beckham Adam” has been captured in New York in connection with the theft of an £8,000 diamond bracelet from a jewellery store in Oceanside. The high-value heist drew sharp criticism from local officials, not just for the crime itself, but for how the suspect was able to operate in the state.
Speaking at a press conference, County Executive Bruce Blakeman highlighted the shocking discovery. "We were visited, apparently, by a celebrity in Nassau County, David Beckham," he said. "Although this isn't a soccer player, this is a celebrity because this individual is wanted in many countries."
The case caused outrage after it was revealed that the fugitive had managed to obtain a New York State driver's licence despite his status.
"Someone who has international warrants out, no fingerprinting, given a driver's licence. This is outrageous, and we have to change the laws of New York state," Blakeman added. The suspect is believed to have entered the United States illegally from Mexico and has used numerous aliases, making his true identity difficult for law enforcement to confirm.
Advanced technology led to capture
The breakthrough in the case came after officers deployed sophisticated face-recognition technology using footage from security cameras. According to a report from GB News, the data was used to create an intelligence bulletin which eventually made its way to a British crime analyst. The analyst was able to successfully identify the man, leading to his eventual arrest.
The suspect is believed to be part of a larger Romanian-based transnational organised crime group and was reportedly considered a national security threat by the FBI. He is currently being held by US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) pending legal proceedings.
The wider trend of organised jewellery theft
The arrest shines a light on a growing trend of transnational crime groups targeting high-value items in the United States. Law enforcement agencies have noted the involvement of highly organised networks, often from Romania and South America, in a string of thefts across the country.
These groups often employ sophisticated methods, including the use of fraudulent identification and creating elaborate distractions to steal from retailers. In a separate case, the Los Angeles Police Department announced the dismantling of a similar group responsible for a series of grand thefts across the US, the UK, and Canada.
Statistics from the Jewelers' Security Alliance (JSA) paint a complex picture. While the total number of crimes against US jewellery firms recently saw a decrease, the total value of losses increased to over $144 million. The JSA also noted a concerning rise in violence associated with these crimes, with incidents involving violence against employees jumping significantly in one year.
The search for his accomplice
While the man known as 'David Beckham' is in custody, officers are still actively hunting for his accomplice. His girlfriend, identified as Veta Rostas, was also allegedly implicated in the diamond bracelet theft. Police have stated that if and when she is traced, she will be deported along with him.
The alleged culprit remains in the custody of US Immigration and Customs Enforcement as he awaits his legal fate.
