Internal documents have exposed serious compliance failures within the Royal British Legion, leading to the charity's entire NI District Committee being "removed from office" in March 2024, reports BBC News NI.

The move followed several internal investigations. At the Antrim branch, a property sale worth £155,781 was allegedly paid directly into the bank account of its associated social club. RBL clubs are separate businesses, and the funds were reportedly used to update the club instead of supporting veterans.

An RBL internal report stated there was "no mention by the branch officers of any property sale income being received". Senior staff called the use of funds "money down the drain" and discussed a private prosecution, though no report has yet been made to regulators.

Meanwhile, the Finaghy branch in south Belfast was also under scrutiny, having caused a loss of nearly £20,000 of charitable funds over 11 years due to a deal with a local church. This issue "contributed to the Northern Ireland District being placed under administration," and the branch has since closed.

These issues, and a scandal in Tandragee, led to a review of the entire Northern Ireland District Committee leadership.

The review noted committee members allegedly "colluded in a plan to divert £1,000 intended for the Poppy Appeal" for two members to attend a concert.

The RBL said in a statement that its "regular procedures identified activity which did not meet our standards for governance, compliance, behaviour and values."

A new NI District Committee has recently been appointed. A spokesperson added, "there is still work to be done... but we are confident that progress is being made."
