Bumble is killing the swipe: AI 'concierges' to date for you
Bumble is scrapping its iconic swipe feature for AI concierges. Discover how digital avatars will date for you to find deeper connections and end user burnout
Dating app Bumble has confirmed plans to eliminate its iconic swipe mechanic, signalling a significant change in how people find love online. The company is developing a new launch for late 2026 that will lean heavily on artificial intelligence (AI) to combat the growing issue of user burnout and superficial connections.
The new system will move far beyond simple swiping, instead using AI "concierges" or digital avatars to interact on a user's behalf. These AI agents will be trained on a user’s profile and behaviour to learn their preferences, communication style, and relationship goals, effectively acting as a personal digital matchmaker.
The core concept is to have these AI concierges engage in preliminary conversations with other AI agents to determine compatibility before any human-to-human contact is made.
This strategic move addresses a common complaint among dating app users: the endless cycle of swiping, matching, and engaging in repetitive small talk that often leads nowhere. By automating this initial phase, Bumble aims to drastically reduce the time and emotional energy users spend on dead-end interactions, presenting them only with matches that have a high potential for a genuine connection.
The goal is to create deeper connections by analysing not just surface-level information but also deeper values, stated insecurities, and personality traits. Bumble's CEO, Whitney Wolfe Herd, has suggested this evolution is a necessary step beyond the limitations of swiping based on a few photos and a short bio.
She envisions a future where technology handles the initial, often exhausting, screening process for its millions of users. The AI will be designed to filter for compatibility on multiple levels, ensuring that when two people finally connect, they already share a foundational level of understanding and mutual interest, paving the way for more meaningful and intentional dating.
