The ex-monarch of Denmark, Queen Margrethe, has been hospitalised, the royal court has revealed.

The 86-year-old is undergoing angina treatment at Rigshospitalet in Copenhagen, with authorities noting she is "tired" yet in "good spirits".

Doctors will continue to monitor the former queen over the weekend as they perform further evaluations, according to the announcement.

Margrethe relinquished the Danish crown in January 2024 after ruling for over fifty years, passing the leadership to her eldest son, now King Frederik.

During her 52-year reign, the Danish monarch was greatly cherished for modernising the royal family while preserving tradition.

The former queen has faced several health issues in recent months.

The previous year, she was also admitted to this Copenhagen hospital for what was described by the palace as routine observation after an unspecified sickness.

In that May 2025 visit, Margrethe stayed for two days before being released back to her home at Fredensborg Palace.

Despite her health setbacks, the former queen has remained involved in royal events since stepping down.

Her latest public appearance took place at Fredensborg Palace, where a concert by the Royal Life Guards Music Corps celebrated her 86th birthday.

The gathering included King Frederik, Queen Mary, and Queen Anne-Marie of Greece.

During the event, Margrethe’s dachshund, Tilia, roamed among the royals, leading Queen Mary to bend down momentarily to pet it.

Margrethe seemed unhappy with the gesture, reportedly saying to her daughter-in-law: "Jeg tror ikke det er den rette tid til det" — which translates to "I don't think now is the right moment for that."
