Catherine, The Princess of Wales, has been met with a rapturous welcome in Italy, marking her first overseas tour since her 2024 cancer diagnosis. The visit is a pivotal step in her return to public life and the launch of her "global mission" for early years development.

A warm welcome in Reggio Emilia

The Princess of Wales was all smiles as she arrived in the northern Italian city of Reggio Emilia for a significant two-day solo visit. Dressed in a striking light blue suit, Catherine was greeted by enthusiastic crowds of well-wishers, who eagerly captured the moment on their phones and called out "Ciao" as she passed.

In a particularly touching moment, the Princess paused to interact with a group of local schoolchildren. She spent several seconds speaking warmly with a young boy in a wheelchair, crouching down to his level to ensure they could speak face-to-face.

The warm interaction underscored the purpose of her visit and highlighted her natural ease with children, a hallmark of her public work. She was accompanied by Marco Massari, the Mayor of Reggio Emilia, who was seen walking alongside her wearing a sash of the Italian flag.

A global mission for children

This trip marks the Princess's first international engagement since late 2022 and her first since revealing her cancer diagnosis in 2024. Described by Kensington Palace as a "huge moment," the visit is a "high-level fact-finding mission" focused on her passionate advocacy for early childhood development. She is in Italy to learn more about the world-renowned Reggio Emilia approach, an influential educational philosophy centred on a child-led curriculum.

The visit kicks off what aides are calling a "global mission" to expand her work in this field internationally. During the tour, Mayor Massari is set to present the Princess with the "Primo Tricolore," the city's highest honour, in recognition of her dedication to the cause.

According to palace sources, the Princess is feeling "energised and enthused" for the trip, which represents a significant step in her recovery and a firm return to the world stage.
