Akon has revealed that he recognised Lady Gaga’s star power long before she became a global pop icon, saying she had an unmistakable “glow” when he first met her.

The 53-year-old singer and producer, who helped launch Gaga’s career through a joint deal with Interscope Records and his KonLive Distribution in 2007, reflected on his early instincts during an appearance on Capital XTRA Breakfast.

Akon, whose real name is Aliaune Thiam, said he immediately sensed that Gaga — born Stefani Germanotta — was destined for superstardom.

“Gaga, for sure. She had the glow immediately,” he said, explaining that some artists carry an aura that sets them apart even before fame arrives.

He added that the same instinct applied to other artists he worked with early in their careers, including rapper T-Pain, whose talent Akon recognised despite early industry resistance.

Akon also pointed to his discovery of Nigerian superstar Wizkid as another example, saying he could instantly tell the artist had the qualities needed for global success.

The hitmaker, best known for tracks such as Smack That and Don’t Matter, said his ability to spot talent is instinctive and difficult to explain, describing it as a kind of “God-given aura.”

“You just know when someone is a star,” he said, adding that some artists naturally stand out even among other talented performers.

However, Akon stressed that talent alone is not enough, saying work ethic plays a crucial role in whether an artist succeeds or fades away.

“If you’re a star and you’re lazy, you’re not going anywhere,” he explained, noting that consistency and discipline are essential in building a lasting career.
