A couple from Pennsylvania is facing multiple criminal charges after their four-month-old son was brought to hospital with bruises covering his body from head to toe and a split lip. Authorities allege that both parents separately admitted to using physical force against the infant.

Mother admits to forcing bottle into baby's mouth out of frustration

Jessica Oster, 26, told police she had become frustrated with her son's persistent crying and admitted to using excessive force while feeding him.

According to the Northern Lancaster County Police Department, she acknowledged that she "used too much force when placing a bottle into the baby's mouth."

Charging documents obtained by the local newspaper, LNP, reveal that Oster initially told investigators she had placed the bottle in the boy's mouth before leaving him unattended for between 20 and 30 minutes, returning to discover his split lip.

She subsequently admitted to violently forcing the bottle into his mouth whilst in a state of frustration, police said.

The child's father, James Oster, allegedly admitted to squeezing the boy hard enough to leave bruises while bathing him.

The case came to light after medical staff raised the alarm with authorities.

"On April 22nd, 2026, the Northern Lancaster County Regional Police Department received a call from UPMC Lititz Hospital regarding a potential child abuse case involving a 4-month-old child who had suspicious bruises and a split lip," an NLCRPD press release states.

"During the investigation, detectives spoke with medical professionals who explained the injuries as a lip laceration, ecchymosis, and a laceration of the upper frenulum. There were also bruises and abrasions over the body."

Mother claimed bouncy seat may have caused injuries

When questioned about the origin of the bruises, Jessica Oster suggested to investigators that they were likely caused either by her husband during bathtime or by the infant's bouncy seat.

She informed police that the couple regularly placed the boy in the bouncy seat with a bottle propped up by a blanket whilst they were in an entirely separate room.

Investigators subsequently examined the bouncy seat and noted a strong odour of urine along with staining that had soaked through to the base of the seat.

Both parents face multiple charges ahead of the preliminary hearing

Authorities have filed an extensive list of charges against both individuals.

"As a result of the investigation, Jessica Oster was charged with aggravated assault (2 counts), simple assault, endangering the welfare of children (2 counts), and recklessly endangering another person," the NLCRPD release states.
