Social media platform X has introduced a new feature called React with Video, enabling users to record video reactions to posts directly within the app.

The move effectively transforms any post on the platform into a potential content creation opportunity, drawing comparisons to similar tools already available on Instagram and TikTok.

Nikita Bier announces the launch

The feature was announced by X's head of product, Nikita Bier, who took to the platform to explain the rationale behind the new tool.

"Commentary is one of the most important pillars of X. And sometimes the best way to share your thoughts is with video," he wrote.

"Today we're launching a whole new way to make them: React with Video," Bier added.

How to use React with Video

To access the feature, users simply tap the Repost button on any post, which brings up an overlay menu where the new video reaction option appears.

"Tap the repost button and start recording with green screen, split screen, or picture-in-picture," Nikita said.

At present, the feature is available exclusively to iOS users. Once activated, the original post appears in the background whilst users record their reaction or commentary as an overlay.

A pause button is also available, allowing users to stop and resume their recording at any point. After recording, users can preview their video reaction before publishing it as a reply to the original post.

Editing tools and layout options

One of the key advantages of React with Video is that it removes the need for external editing software, downloaded clips, or complicated workflows.

The app includes an automatic background removal option, and users can resize their video and adjust its placement within the frame.

The feature supports three distinct layout modes:

  • Picture-in-picture: Reaction sits over the content
  • Split-screen: Divides the view between you and the original post
  • Full-screen media: Allows you to hide the original post's text to focus entirely on its attached image or video

The tool has been designed to capitalise on the viral appeal of reaction-style videos, offering users a more expressive and seamless way to respond to content without ever leaving the app.

Users react to the announcement

The launch generated considerable buzz online, with many users praising the feature's creative potential.

One tech enthusiast wrote on X, "This is brilliant! React with Video is exactly what commentary on X needed — green screen, split screen, picture-in-picture… so clean and creative. Finally, a smart way to add your thoughts with video without leaving the app. Huge win for the platform. Well done."

Others used the moment to reflect on the broader trend of social media platforms borrowing features from one another.

"X is getting reaction videos, YouTube is getting threads and polls. Every app is becoming every other app. That's interesting and weird at the same time," one user commented.

Not everyone was entirely enthusiastic, however, with some users expressing reservations. "Kinda cool, but also let's not turn this into FB or YouTube please," one person cautioned.
