King Charles and Kate Middleton unite for Cancer Research UK 125th anniversary reception
King Charles and Kate Middleton mark Cancer Research UK anniversary in powerful show of unity
King Charles and the Princess of Wales have presented a powerful show of solidarity in what marked their first joint cancer-focused royal engagement since both announced their respective diagnoses in 2024.
A meaningful occasion at St James's Palace
Kate joined King Charles and Queen Camilla at St James's Palace in London on 2 June for a special reception held to commemorate the 125th anniversary of Cancer Research UK.
The event celebrated the charity's enduring contributions to cancer prevention, diagnosis, and treatment, whilst also shining a light on the latest advances in medical research.
Their respective cancer journeys
King Charles made his diagnosis public in February 2024 and continues to receive cancer treatment. The Princess of Wales revealed her own diagnosis just a month later, in March 2024, and temporarily withdrew from public duties whilst undergoing treatment.
Kate completed chemotherapy in September 2024 and announced she was in remission in January 2025.
Meeting those at the heart of the cause
At the reception, the King and the Princess of Wales met with researchers, clinicians, volunteers, and cancer patients whose work and personal experiences have played a significant role in shaping the charity's mission over the years.
A close and enduring bond
The appearance also drew attention to the well-documented closeness between the King and the wife of Prince William.
"I don't think it is presumptuous to say that she is like the daughter he never had," author Sally Bedell Smith previously told People magazine.
