Jennifer Aniston has revealed that even some of Hollywood’s biggest names were unexpectedly “nervous” when guest-starring on the hit sitcom Friends, despite their global fame.

Speaking during a conversation with longtime co-star Lisa Kudrow for Variety’s Actors on Actors series, Aniston reflected on the show’s impressive list of guest stars, which included high-profile names such as Brad Pitt, Bruce Willis, Julia Roberts, Isabella Rossellini and Sean Penn.

Aniston, who played Rachel Green on the beloved sitcom, said she was surprised by how unsettled many established film stars appeared when stepping onto the show’s set.

“The movie stars that came on Friends… they were always nervous,” she said. “I always found it fascinating how nervous they were.”

Kudrow agreed, noting that the format of the show often created uncertainty for actors more accustomed to film or theatre work, as they adjusted to the rhythm and tone of multi-camera television.

She explained that performers often struggled to understand the sitcom style at first, adding that the experience could feel unfamiliar compared to other acting environments.

“Because what’s the tone? It’s not theatre; it’s for TV. It’s not a movie. What the hell is this?” Kudrow said, reflecting on the learning curve many guest stars faced.

Aniston jokingly responded, simplifying the show’s approach in hindsight: “Just talk louder!”

Kudrow also shared her personal experience of revisiting the series years later, admitting she initially avoided watching episodes but eventually grew to appreciate the show’s impact and performances.

Despite her early hesitation, she said watching the series later left her impressed with the work of her co-stars, including Aniston.

“I loved it with all my heart,” Kudrow said. “Man, you were really good.”

The discussion also revisited the early days of Friends, which ran from 1994 to 2004 and starred Aniston, Kudrow, Courteney Cox, David Schwimmer, Matt LeBlanc, and the late Matthew Perry.

Aniston noted that in the show’s early seasons, the cast occasionally watched episodes together, though that habit faded as their schedules became increasingly demanding.

Kudrow added that she personally found it difficult to watch herself on screen, saying it sometimes felt “embarrassing” to sit and view her own performances at home.
