In an Instagram video shared on May 28, diabetologist Dr Vipul highlighted that “Most people take iron tablets the wrong way… and then wonder why their hemoglobin is not improving.” He stressed that iron works best when taken properly, and small changes in routine can make a significant difference.
Empty Stomach
Dr Vipul advised that iron tablets should be taken first thing in the morning on an empty stomach. He explained: “It is a misconception that taking the supplement daily will lead to a faster increase in blood levels; absolutely not. You must take it on alternate days; this method actually promotes a quicker rise in iron levels.”
With Vitamin C
He further recommended pairing iron supplements with vitamin C, such as orange juice or lemon water, to improve absorption. Both beverages enhance the body’s ability to utilize iron more effectively.
Avoiding Caffeine and Calcium
Dr Vipul cautioned against consuming iron supplements with tea, coffee, or calcium. According to the Health Science Authority, tannins in tea, caffeine in coffee, and calcium interfere with iron absorption, reducing the supplement’s effectiveness.
Duration of Supplementation
Finally, Dr Vipul emphasized the importance of continuing supplementation for at least three to six months. He explained that while hemoglobin levels may return to normal within a month, the body’s iron reserves often remain depleted. He revealed that once the body receives an adequate supply of iron, it begins to synthesize hemoglobin. But to fully replenish these iron reserves, it is essential to continue taking the iron supplement for at least this period.
