Rachel Zegler brings Broadway to tears with emotional Tony Awards performance
The Tony Awards moment left the audience visibly emotional and earned a standing ovation
Rachel Zegler delivered one of the most emotional moments of the 2026 Tony Awards, captivating audiences at Radio City Music Hall with a heartfelt tribute marking the 50th anniversary of A Chorus Line.
The 25-year-old actress took the stage on Sunday night to perform a stirring rendition of the classic ballad What I Did for Love, earning a standing ovation and leaving much of the audience visibly moved.
The performance honored the legacy of the landmark musical, which first opened at the Shubert Theatre in 1975 and went on to become one of Broadway’s most iconic productions, running for 6,137 performances and winning nine Tony Awards in 1976, including Best Musical and Best Direction.
Rachel Zegler, who arrived earlier on the red carpet in a sleek brown V-neck gown, was among the night’s standout performers, with her tribute widely praised as one of the ceremony’s emotional highlights.
The moment comes during a significant period in Zegler’s rising stage career. The West Side Story star has been receiving strong critical acclaim following her Olivier Award win earlier this year for her performance in Evita in London’s West End.
She is now preparing to reprise her role as Eva Perón when Evita transfers to Broadway next spring under director Jamie Lloyd, a production she has described as a “once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.”
Composer Andrew Lloyd Webber has previously praised Zegler as a “generational talent,” while hinting at a refreshed Broadway staging of the iconic musical.
The Tony Awards ceremony also featured a surprise theatrical moment involving Webber and fashion editor Anna Wintour in a playful segment referencing Cats, adding a touch of humor to an evening dominated by Broadway celebrations.
But it was Zegler’s emotional performance that defined the night, cementing her growing status as one of Broadway’s most compelling young stars.
