Finneas O'Connell, singer-songwriter and brother of Billie Eilish, has shared the full story of how he proposed to fiancée Claudia Sulewski — a carefully orchestrated plan involving a helicopter, a private mountain campsite, a personal chef, and a ring hidden inside a sock.

The 28-year-old musician appeared on Today with Jenne & Sheinelle on NBC on Wednesday to recount the proposal in detail, telling hosts how he used their seventh anniversary as what he called a "Trojan horse."

How the plan came together

Finneas and Sulewski, a 30-year-old American YouTuber and host, began dating seven years ago after connecting through a dating application. When September of last year arrived, Finneas used their anniversary dinner as cover, banking on the occasion being romantic enough that Sulewski would not suspect anything beyond a typical celebration.

"I think she thought we were going to go do a little staycation at a beach. I was relying on her to be distracted by getting ready in the morning, and maybe sending a work email or something," he said.

Helicopter, mountains and a private chef

The plan escalated well beyond a beach staycation. Finneas drove Sulewski to the airport without revealing why, before boarding a helicopter bound for a private campsite in the mountains — complete with a personal chef who cooked for the couple before departing by helicopter, leaving them alone on the mountainside.

"And I drove her to the airport. She was like, 'Why are we at the airport?' We got on a helicopter, and I was like, 'We're taking a helicopter to a private campsite in the mountains,' and I brought a private chef with us. And so he cooked food for us, and then he got back on the helicopter and left," he recalled. "We were marooned on the mountainside, and then we just had this really beautiful day out in nature. And then, I did ask [her to marry me]," the Beef season 2 composer added.

The ring hidden in a sock

Keeping the secret on the day itself required some improvisation. Finneas had concealed the engagement ring inside a sock, wrapped around another sock, buried in his suitcase — and the plan nearly unravelled when the ring began rattling in its box inside his pocket.

"The ring was in a sock wrapped around another sock in my suitcase. And then there was one point where it was about to happen, and I was, like, 'Hang on. One second.' It was just lies all day," he said.

"And I ran around, and I heard the ring, like, rattling in the box in my pocket. And so I went and hid behind a bush and untied the thing and opened it and tucked it back in its little slot, and then was, like, walking in a sort of ballet pose," he recollected.
