A Georgia jury convicted Desmond Jamal Camp, 37, on Thursday of violently assaulting his then-romantic partner at a Canton hotel in April 2025, after she refused his demands for sex. The Blue Ridge Judicial Circuit District Attorney's Office confirmed the verdict, which followed a two-day trial. Camp is scheduled to be sentenced later this month.

The attack

The victim was staying at a Quality Inn in Canton on 30 April 2025 whilst working a job for a nearby employer. She had returned to the hotel room to sleep when Camp insisted on having sex. After she refused, Camp attempted to remove her clothing and then held a knife to her throat. The assault left her with cuts on her hand that bled onto the bed, consistent with physical evidence later found at the scene by investigators.

Canton Police Department Officers responded to the hotel after receiving a 911 call reporting an assault and found the woman bleeding and partially unclothed. She was wrapped in a blanket because her shirt and shorts had been sliced open, leaving the front of her body exposed.

Whilst Camp was momentarily distracted, she managed to escape to the hotel's front desk, where a member of staff called 911 and placed her in a back office for her safety. Camp fled the hotel but was arrested when he attempted to access an interstate.

The verdict

Following the two-day trial, Camp was found guilty of family violence aggravated assault and false imprisonment. He was acquitted of two additional counts of family violence aggravated assault and one count of family violence battery.
