'Who let me jump off a bridge?' — woman's last Instagram story before fatal fall in Brazil
Video shows the safety rope lying unattached on the ground as De Freitas was pushed over the edge
Maria Eduarda Rodrigues de Freitas, 21, died on Saturday after plunging 130 feet from a bridge in Limeira, São Paulo, Brazil, when rope jump staff allegedly forgot to attach her safety cord. Her final Instagram stories, posted just hours before her death, have since taken on a haunting significance.
The BBC and several local outlets reported the incident, while a representative for the São Paulo government previously confirmed to PEOPLE that six people were brought in for questioning.
A chilling final Instagram story
In the hours before her death, De Freitas shared a series of posts on her Instagram that have since taken on a new and disturbing meaning. "Who was the crazy person who let me jump off a bridge?" she wrote, Globo reported.
Globo shared three screengrabs from her Instagram stories. One showed the steep height from which the jump begins; another featured two wristbands printed with the words "Takeoff authorized" in Portuguese. A third image showed a "Danger" sign on a rural road.
'Guys, the rope!'
The jump took place at a location known as "Skeleton Bridge," an abandoned structure that has over the years become a draw for adventure seekers and adrenaline enthusiasts. A video of the incident, later shared online by Globo, captured the moments leading up to De Freitas's fall.
In the footage, three staff members are seen lifting De Freitas and manoeuvring her over the bridge's edge to a narrow landing, as a rope lies on the ground visibly unattached to her. Two of the staff members then carry her to the edge before she fell. A witness who was filming the jump immediately noticed the error, shouting to staff: "Guys, the rope!"
Homicide investigation under way
Local authorities are treating the case as a homicide with implied malice — a legal classification used when a defendant assumes the risk of killing without intent — Globo reported. Six individuals have been brought in for questioning as the investigation continues.
