Amanda Seyfried recalls supporting Sydney Sweeney through jeans ad controversy
The actress says she stood by her co-star with kindness and humor during backlash over a jeans campaign
Amanda Seyfried has opened up about offering quiet support to Sydney Sweeney during a period of intense public backlash surrounding a 2025 advertising campaign.
Speaking in a recent interview with GQ, the 40-year-old actress reflected on working alongside Sweeney on their 2025 film The Housemaid, which was being promoted at the same time the younger star faced criticism over a jeans advertisement that sparked widespread controversy online.
Seyfried said she was aware the situation was likely difficult for her co-star, but chose not to publicly comment on the dispute.
“We had a great time on the press tour. We worked really hard and she seemed to be having fun, but I also understood that probably it can't be f---ing easy, where she found herself,” Seyfried said.
She added that while she has seen Sweeney defend herself in the public eye, she empathized with the pressure surrounding the moment.
“I have heard her stand up for herself, but I think she found herself between a rock and a hard place,” she said.
Seyfried also explained how she showed support in a personal, low-key way, without drawing attention to the situation.
“I don't want to be a source of anything, but whatever you need. You need some fun, you need to laugh, you need cake with me? That's fine,” she said.
The comments refer to the period in 2025 when Sweeney faced criticism over an American Eagle campaign featuring the slogan “Sydney Sweeney Has Great Jeans,” which some online interpreted as racially insensitive due to the wordplay on “genes.”
Despite the controversy at the time, Seyfried emphasized that her focus remained on supporting her co-star privately while continuing their shared promotional work on The Housemaid.
