AlphaFold Nobel winner John Jumper leaves Google DeepMind for Anthropic
John Jumper leaves Google DeepMind after nearly a decade to join AI startup Anthropic
John Jumper, the Google DeepMind scientist who shared the 2024 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for developing the groundbreaking AlphaFold system, has announced he is leaving the company to join AI startup Anthropic.
Jumper revealed the move in a post on X on Friday, ending nearly a decade at Google and marking the latest high-profile departure from a major technology company to one of the rapidly growing artificial intelligence startups.
“The entire GDM team taught me so much about how to do great science,” Jumper wrote. “GDM is a special place, and I'll still be excited to hear about what amazing things they discover next.”
Architect of AlphaFold Breakthrough
Jumper is best known for leading the development of AlphaFold, an AI system capable of predicting the three-dimensional structure of proteins from their amino acid sequences.
The technology is widely regarded as one of the most significant scientific applications of artificial intelligence, helping researchers accelerate discoveries in biology, medicine and drug development.
AlphaFold dramatically reduced the time required to analyse protein structures, a process that previously could take months or even years. The platform now provides access to more than 200 million protein structure predictions used by scientists worldwide.
For the breakthrough, Jumper shared the 2024 Nobel Prize in Chemistry with DeepMind co-founder and chief executive Demis Hassabis.
Hassabis paid tribute to his former colleague following the announcement.
“What we achieved with AlphaFold changed the world, and showed the field what was possible with AI for science and medicine, lighting the way for how AI can benefit humanity,” he wrote.
Latest High-Profile AI Defection
Jumper's move comes amid intense competition for top AI talent across Silicon Valley, with companies such as Anthropic and OpenAI increasingly attracting researchers and executives from major technology firms.
Anthropic has emerged as one of the most closely watched AI startups, benefiting from growing investor interest and speculation about a future public offering.
While Jumper confirmed he is joining Anthropic, he did not disclose what role he will take at the company.
Instead, he indicated that he plans to take a short break before beginning his next chapter.
“First, I’ll be taking some time to recharge,” he wrote.
AI Talent War Intensifies
Jumper's departure highlights the escalating battle among AI companies to recruit leading researchers capable of advancing the next generation of artificial intelligence systems.
As firms race to develop increasingly powerful models and expand AI applications beyond chatbots into scientific discovery, healthcare and advanced research, experts with proven records of breakthrough innovation have become some of the industry's most sought-after hires.
For Anthropic, landing one of the architects behind AlphaFold represents another significant addition as competition among the world's leading AI developers continues to intensify.
