Billy Ray Cyrus has paid tribute to his late father, Ron Cyrus, on Father's Day with a never-before-seen childhood photo of Miley Cyrus with her grandfather. The country singer shared the touching post on his Instagram account on Monday.
In the caption, Billy Ray recalled the painful circumstances of his father's death and the message that followed it. "My dad passed away in 2006 while we were filming the first season of Hannah Montana in LA. When I got home after his funeral, I found his message on the answering machine," he wrote.
Dad's final message lives on in new album
Billy Ray went on to reveal that "How've You Been" was one of his father's favourite songs. He explained that, in tribute to his dad, he had preserved that final voicemail message by featuring it on his new album, The Hill.
"@braisonccyrus and I recorded it and included it on THE HILL!!!" the proud father and son wrote, referencing his work with his son, Braison Cyrus.
Throwback photos with Miley and Noah
The "Achy Breaky Heart" singer also shared throwback snaps of his father with granddaughters Noah Cyrus and Miley Cyrus, both pictured sitting on his lap during their childhood. "These photos are some of my favorite memories... Dad with @mileycyrus and @noahcyrus," Billy Ray penned.
He explained why he chose to post the tribute earlier than planned. "Thinking of him tonight before I take the stage so I decided to post a little early," he said, referring to his concert at Billy Bob's Texas in Fort Worth on 20 June. Billy Ray closed the heartfelt post simply: "Happy Father's Day."
