Sarah Sherman shares funny story of Paul McCartney asking if her mullet was real
The ‘SNL’ star says Paul McCartney playfully responded to her fan moment with humor and charm
Sarah Sherman is sharing a surreal and funny encounter she had with Paul McCartney during his recent appearance on Saturday Night Live.
The 33-year-old comedian recalled meeting the Beatles legend, 84, after previously joking on the show about her mullet hairstyle being inspired by McCartney’s Wings-era look.
Sherman explained to People that the moment unfolded after McCartney appeared as musical guest on the May 16 season 51 finale of SNL, hosted by Will Ferrell.
“So, basically I was doing a bit talking about how I have his mullet from his Wings era,” Sherman said in an interview. “And so he came up to me after the show and he pulled up my mullet and he was like, ‘Is it real or is it a wig?’”
Sherman quickly confirmed the hairstyle was real before enthusiastically sharing her admiration for the music icon.
“I was like, ‘Paul McCartney, I love you, you’re amazing. Like, McCartney II is my favorite album ever, and ‘Temporary Secretary’ is my favorite song,’” she said.
Sherman admitted she became self-conscious about how much she was praising him, but McCartney reportedly responded with humor.
“And he said, ‘I love adulation. Adulate me. Adulate me,’” she recalled.
The comedian said the interaction felt surreal, adding simply, “Yeah, it was awesome. It was awesome.”
Sherman had previously shared a version of the story during an appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live!, where she described McCartney recognizing her by name and interacting with her during the show’s traditional “goodnights” segment.
“I think it’s very rare that somebody gets their mullet pulled by a Beatle,” she joked during that appearance.
Sherman, who joined Saturday Night Live in 2021 and became a repertory cast member in 2023, has become known for her distinctive comedic style and offbeat humor.
She has also continued expanding her career outside of SNL, including appearances in You Are So Not Invited to My Bat Mitzvah and her HBO Max comedy special Sarah Squirm: Live + in the Flesh.
