Thirteen-year-old killed during sleepover at friend's home

A man has been arrested and charged with murder after a teenage boy and an adult were shot dead when gunmen fired dozens of rounds into a home in DeKalb County, Georgia.

Demarcus Shirley, 13, and Chauncey Newman, 45, died after the property on Rockcliff Road was struck by gunfire on the morning of 2 July, according to the DeKalb County Sheriff's Office. Shirley had been staying overnight at the house for a sleepover with several other boys. No one else inside was injured.

Keyshun Webb, 21, was taken into custody on Tuesday in connection with the shooting. He is being held without bail at DeKalb County Jail and faces two counts of murder, eight counts of aggravated assault with a weapon, and one count of cruelty to animals.

Arrest warrants seen by local media indicate that footage allegedly links Webb to a separate drive-by shooting that occurred the same day. Investigators found matching shell casings at both scenes and said gang involvement was considered likely. Officials believe two vehicles and four male suspects were involved, though no further arrests have been made.

Two boys who were asleep in the house at the time, Larenzo Pinkins and Larry Bell-Ware, described the moment they discovered Shirley had been killed, with Pinkins saying he had tried to reach his friend after coming upstairs. Both described Shirley as a lively child who "liked to run around and play like a normal little kid" and was not involved in gang activity.

Shirley's great-uncle, Gregory Carthon, remembered him as athletic and eager to learn, saying he had "a lot of life in front of him". Newman was also remembered fondly by those close to him, with Bell-Ware describing him as someone who welcomed children with nowhere else to go.
