'Sex and the City' star Jason Lewis opens up about early struggles
The 'Sex and the City' star recalled sleeping on floors and struggling to afford food before his acting career
Jason Lewis has reflected on the difficult years before finding success in Hollywood, revealing he was once so broke that he survived on mustard sandwiches and slept on floors while trying to build a modelling career in Europe.
The Sex and the City actor opened up about his early struggles during an appearance on Kristin Davis' Are You a Charlotte? podcast, recalling the financial hardships he faced after moving to Paris at 21 to pursue modelling.
"I starved for a while," Lewis admitted, explaining that many of his meals consisted of a baguette topped with free mustard from outdoor cafés because he could not afford proper food.
The 55-year-old also revealed he spent months sleeping on floors and living on little more than cucumbers and cheese before his career finally began to improve about a year and a half later.
Joking about the experience, Lewis said the upside was that "it was easy to stay skinny."
His fortunes changed in the mid-1990s with television roles in High Sierra Search and Rescue and Beverly Hills, 90210, before landing his breakout role as Jerry "Smith" Jerrod on Sex and the City in 2003.
Today, Lewis has stepped away from the spotlight and relocated from California to Costa Rica, where he is focused on writing an ambitious fantasy book series.
He revealed he is developing three interconnected trilogies inspired by epic fantasy, describing the project as being closer to The Lord of the Rings with a unique magic system rooted in physics.
Lewis added that life in Costa Rica has given him the healthy lifestyle and creative environment he wanted, allowing him to dedicate time to writing almost every day.
