Jennifer Garner embraced an unusual nickname her children gave her, revealing they affectionately call her "The Crone" and admitting it has become one of her favourite family jokes. The actress said she sees the playful teasing as part of raising teenagers and chooses to laugh along rather than take offence.

Garner made the revelation while speaking with her Five-Star Weekend co-star Chloë Sevigny in a joint interview with Elle. The 54-year-old shares Violet, 20, Seraphina "Fin", 17, and Samuel, 13, with former husband Ben Affleck.

Family joke

During the conversation, Garner recalled overhearing her children referring to her as "The Crone" while talking among themselves. They would jokingly ask, "Where's the crone?" before announcing, "Oh, the crone sits!"

Although the nickname traditionally describes an elderly, often disagreeable woman, Garner admitted she has no idea where it came from. Instead of dwelling on its meaning, she said she enjoys the joke and even considers it one of her favourite things.

She explained that teenagers often bond by teasing their parents and believes the humour comes from affection. Garner added that she might have reacted differently if her children had started making the joke when they were younger, but now she simply embraces it.

Parenting in the spotlight

Garner previously revealed on The Jennifer Hudson Show that her children also consider her "fully cringe," another label she takes in good humour.

The actress has often spoken about raising her children while navigating life in the public eye. She and Affleck have previously discussed the challenges paparazzi created for their family, with Garner recalling that photographers frequently disrupted everyday activities and even forced one of her children's football teams to ask the family to stop attending practices because of the media attention.

Garner currently stars alongside Sevigny in Five-Star Weekend, which is streaming on Peacock.
