Colin Jost settles debate over Scarlett Johansson's last name

Colin Jost cleared up the long-standing question about how to pronounce wife Scarlett Johansson's last name, revealing that its original Scandinavian pronunciation differs from the version most people use today.

During a Q&A session with audience members of Pop Culture Jeopardy!, the comedian was asked how Johansson's surname should be pronounced.

"I certainly say Jo-hansson," Jost said, joking that he never calls out to his wife by saying, "Yo, Johansson, why is the fridge empty?"

Jost explained that Johansson's Danish and Swedish heritage likely influenced the surname's original pronunciation.

"It was Yo-hansson probably originally," he said, adding that his own surname may also have changed over generations.

"I was probably 'Yost' in Germany. But now, that's all long forgotten. So we changed together."

Johansson, who was born in New York, holds dual American and Danish citizenship. Her father is originally from Copenhagen, Denmark, while her paternal great-grandfather was Swedish.

The actress has previously explored her family's history on PBS' Finding Your Roots, where she learned more about her maternal great-grandfather, who emigrated from Poland to the United States in 1910.

Jost also revealed during the Q&A that the most famous contact in his phone is "probably the one labeled wife," before joking that he has accidentally called rapper Jack Harlow while trying to reach a friend with a similar name.
