‘The Odyssey’ sets new milestone as IMAX celebrates major box-office boost
IMAX CEO Rich Gelfond has credited The Odyssey with driving record-breaking results
Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey is continuing to make a major impact at the box office, with IMAX crediting the epic film for helping drive one of its strongest performances in years.
The giant-screen exhibitor revealed that it recorded a 12% increase in revenue compared with the previous year, earning $102.8 million in second-quarter revenue.
The company also reported its best worldwide second-quarter box office performance in seven years, with Nolan’s Greek mythology-inspired film playing a major role in the success.
Nolan, a longtime supporter of Imax technology, pushed to shoot The Odyssey entirely using Imax cameras, marking the first time a feature film had been filmed completely in the format.
The decision appears to have paid off, as audiences continue to show strong demand for the movie and theaters have added additional screenings to meet interest.
Imax CEO Rich Gelfond praised the film’s influence and said its success could have a lasting impact beyond ticket sales.
“The Odyssey has the potential to impact our business in many ways that are clear and many ways we can’t yet predict, as its success on our platform reverberates across the creative community and throughout the entertainment landscape,” Gelfond said.
Looking ahead, Gelfond said the momentum created by Nolan’s film will help support Imax’s upcoming releases, including another major production filmed with Imax cameras.
“In the near-term, the film gives us excellent momentum as we enter the second half of the year, with a strong slate that culminates with ‘Dune: Part Three,’ which was also shot with IMAX film cameras and will be presented in IMAX 70mm film,” he said.
With The Odyssey continuing its successful theatrical run, the film has further strengthened Nolan’s reputation as a filmmaker committed to large-format cinema while highlighting the growing audience demand for immersive movie experiences.
