Minka Kelly wanted boyfriend Dan Reynolds back in 'Ransom Canyon'
The actress says the latest season explores the difficult choices people face when love and timing don't align
Minka Kelly has revealed she hoped to reunite with boyfriend Dan Reynolds on screen in the second season of Ransom Canyon, but the Imagine Dragons frontman was simply too busy to return.
The 46-year-old actress told People that she pitched the idea of bringing Reynolds' character, cattle buyer Billy Brinks, back after his surprise appearance in the first season of the Netflix romantic drama.
"We tried to find a way to bring Billy Brinks back," Kelly said. "I was like, 'Maybe the triangle is with Billy Brinks.'"
However, the singer, 39, was unable to reprise the role.
"Sadly, he was unavailable," Kelly explained. "He's a little busy."
Instead, season two sees Kelly's character, Quinn, caught in a complicated love triangle after returning to her Texas hometown following six months in New York City.
She reunites with longtime love Staten, played by Josh Duhamel, while navigating a new relationship with Oliver, portrayed by Ben Robson.
Kelly, who has been dating Reynolds since 2022, previously revealed that the show's producers immediately warmed to the musician when he visited the set during filming of the first season.
"It's easy to love Dan," she said, recalling how the creative team asked whether he would be interested in making a cameo.
She also revealed that despite years of performing in front of thousands of fans, Reynolds was unexpectedly nervous about stepping in front of the cameras for his acting debut.
Reflecting on Quinn's emotional journey in the new season, Kelly said the love triangle developed naturally rather than being the original plan for her character.
"She really wanted to move on," Kelly explained, adding that Quinn believed she had found a fresh start in New York before returning home to discover a changed version of Staten.
The actress said the storyline highlights the complicated nature of relationships and the difficult choices people often face when trying to do the right thing.
Ransom Canyon season two is now streaming on Netflix.
