Investigators pivot search strategies as DNA test results come back negative

Authorities turn to genetic genealogy and specific forensic profiling after initial CODIS results fail

By GH Web Desk

The investigation into the kidnapping of Nancy Guthrie has hit a significant hurdle. A glove found near the scene, initially thought to be a promising lead, did not yield a DNA match within the FBI's CODIS system. This setback has forced investigators to pivot toward alternative methods, specifically genetic genealogy. By working with smaller DNA databases that permit law enforcement access, officials hope to identify relatives of the suspect and narrow down their search geographically, particularly in the Tucson area.

Beyond DNA, the FBI is leveraging "gumshoe" detective work to track down the kidnapper. They have compiled a list of approximately 40 individuals who purchased a unique holster seen in video footage—one that was notably ill-fitted for the suspect’s handgun. By cross-referencing these purchases with sales of specific backpacks and jackets, authorities are looking for a "perfect storm" of evidence. Meanwhile, TMZ has decided to halt public updates on a potential informant to ensure the safety of the ongoing rescue mission.
