Maggie Gyllenhaal applauds Jessie Buckley’s award-winning streak
The filmmaker calls longtime friend Jessie Buckley 'brilliant' after her award-winning performance
Maggie Gyllenhaal has celebrated her longtime friend and collaborator, Jessie Buckley, who has been receiving numerous awards for her role in Hamnet.
At the U.S. premiere of Gyllenhaal’s latest film, The Bride!, on Tuesday, March 3, at Jazz at Lincoln Center in New York City, the 48-year-old actress spoke exclusively to PEOPLE about witnessing Buckley’s rise.
“I’ve known Jessie a long time,” Gyllenhaal said. “She was in my first film, The Lost Daughter, and I think she’s really brilliant. I’m so pleased for her about everything that’s happening in the world, seeing her talent.”
Buckley, 36, has been receiving acclaim for her portrayal of Agnes Shakespeare in Hamnet, a period drama based on Maggie O’Farrell’s 2020 novel.
The film explores the grief of Agnes and William Shakespeare (Paul Mescal) following the loss of their son, Hamnet—a tragedy that inspires the creation of Hamlet.
Since the film’s release, Buckley has won a Golden Globe for Best Actress in a Drama, the Critics’ Choice Movie Award for Best Actress, a BAFTA for Best Actress in a Leading Role, and an Actor Award for Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Leading Role.
She is also nominated for Best Actress at this year’s Oscars, marking her second Academy Award nod after 2021’s Best Supporting Actress nomination for The Lost Daughter.
Buckley now stars in The Bride!, directed and written by Gyllenhaal, as the iconic Bride of Frankenstein.
The film, inspired by the 1935 classic and Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein, also features Christian Bale as Frankenstein’s monster.
“I think in this movie, it’s like next level… I don’t think anyone’s ever seen what she does in this movie,” Gyllenhaal told PEOPLE of Buckley’s performance.
