'Scream 7’ slips 74% in its second weekend but still outpaces ‘The Bride’

‘The Bride’ collapses with a $7.3M opening against a $90M budget

Director Maggie Gyllenhaal’s gothic reimagining of The Bride of Frankenstein, The Bride, has stumbled at the box office, earning just $7.3 million domestically in its opening weekend.

Released in 3,304 theaters across North America, the Warner Bros. film falls far short of its $90 million production budget and industry expectations.

Industry tracking had projected $16–18 million, with even conservative estimates anticipating $10–15 million.

Early audience reactions mirror the weak opening: the film holds a 59% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and received a “C+” CinemaScore, suggesting limited word-of-mouth momentum. Internationally, The Bride added $6.3 million, bringing its global total to a disappointing $13.6 million.

The film stars Christian Bale as a lonely Frankenstein’s monster, Jessie Buckley as the undead companion he commissions, and Annette Bening as the scientist who helps create her.

Despite the star-studded cast and Gyllenhaal’s second turn behind the camera following 2021’s The Lost Daughter, the film is expected to lose tens of millions, ending Warner Bros.’ recent streak of hits, including Sinners, Weapons, and Wuthering Heights.

A Warner Bros. spokesperson commented, “In a business increasingly risk-averse, studios taking bold swings on originals is important. Even the 1927 Yankees had 44 losses that season.”
