Dental symptoms often provide early warning signs for serious underlying medical conditions

Expert explains how oral health reflects systemic physical wellness

Oral health serves as a vital mirror to the body’s overall condition, revealing systemic issues before other symptoms manifest.

Dr Tania Nijhawan, Founder of Udana Wellness with credentials from NYU and USC, explained to HT Lifestyle that teeth and gums offer crucial clues for early diagnosis.

Dr Tania said, "In today’s fast-paced lifestyle, dental care is often overlooked until pain arises." She further noted, "A healthy mouth truly reflects a healthy body."

1. Bleeding gums and heart health

Occasional bleeding might result from poor brushing, but persistent issues suggest periodontal disease. Dr Tania mentioned:

  • Bacteria from infected gums can enter the bloodstream.
  • This contributes to inflammation of blood vessels.
  • It increases the risk of heart disease and stroke.

2. Dry mouth and diabetes

Xerostomia, or chronic dry mouth, often relates to more than simple dehydration. Reduced saliva flow is common in those with uncontrolled diabetes, as high blood sugar affects salivary glands.

3. Tooth erosion and digestive disorders

"Unexplained enamel erosion, especially on the inner surfaces of teeth, can be a sign of acid reflux or gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD)," said Dr Tania. Stomach acids weaken enamel, leading to sensitivity.

4. Mouth ulcers and immune health

Frequent ulcers may indicate:

  • Low levels of iron, vitamin B12, or folic acid.
  • Weakened immunity or autoimmune conditions.

5. Loose teeth and bone health

Teeth feeling loose without trauma may signal underlying bone loss. Conditions like osteoporosis affect the jawbone, which dentists often detect on X-rays before other medical professionals.
