How to identify signs of digital drainage during personal downtime
Digital engagement often simulates relaxation while actually increasing cognitive fatigue levels
Modern relaxation has transitioned from reading and walking to mindless digital scrolling. Hema Mishra, a therapist and coach at Coto, informed HT Lifestyle that this habit often undermines its intended purpose.
Mishra stated, “Scrolling through social media can feel relaxing, but it often leaves you more tired than when you started.” She noted that while it seems like a break, the brain remains constantly stimulated.
Why mindless scrolling feels calm
Psychologically, variable rewards drive this behaviour. Every like or post triggers a dopamine burst, creating a cycle similar to slot machines.
However, this creates cognitive overload as the brain processes a flood of information. Even during perceived downtime, attention never truly rests.
How does mindless scrolling zap your energy?
Digital engagement takes a serious toll on emotional and mental energy for several reasons:
- Mindless scrolling bombards the brain with unnecessary information.
- Exposure to negative or unrelated content causes massive cognitive fatigue.
- The brain stays in high alert mode, releasing cortisol during a low-grade fight state.
- Long hours in sedentary positions cause physical exhaustion and eye strain.
Mishra also highlighted that social comparison contributes to exhaustion. Viewing curated lives increases feelings of inadequacy and FOMO, silently draining emotional reserves.
She explains that social media can be enjoyable, but without awareness, it quietly depletes energy. Adopting mindful use ensures people stay connected without feeling completely drained at the end of the day.
