Back to the Future actor James Tolkan dies aged 94
Family of James Tolkan announces his death through a spokesperson on Friday afternoon
The entertainment world is mourning the loss of veteran character actor James Tolkan, who has died at the age of 94.
According to a report by the Hollywood Reporter on Friday, the actor’s family announced his passing through a spokesperson.
Writing on the franchise’s official website, writer-producer Bob Gale confirmed that Tolkan "passed away peacefully in Saranac Lake, NY" on Thursday.
He is survived by his wife, Parmelee, whom he met on the 1971 off-Broadway set of "Pinkville" before the couple wed in Lake Placid later that same year.
Tolkan achieved cinematic immortality for his memorable disdain for "slackers" as the stern vice principal Mr Strickland in the original "Back to the Future".
He reprised the role in the 1989 sequel and portrayed Strickland’s grandfather in the 1990 western-themed third instalment.
In a 2021 interview with "Reality of Wrestling", the Michigan-born actor recalled his "challenging" start in 1956, arriving in New York City on a Greyhound bus with just 75 dollars.
Reflecting on his journey from being a "bus boy on Central Park South" to a Hollywood mainstay, he remarked, "In some way or another, I’m a success."
Throughout the 1970s and 1980s, Tolkan became a fixture of American cinema with roles in "Top Gun", "WarGames", and "Masters of the Universe".
His extensive television credits included appearances on "The Wonder Years" and "The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air", with his final screen appearance occurring in the 2024 documentary "Tom Wilson: Humbly Super Famous".
