Anya Taylor-Joy sets record straight on ‘Super Mario’ vomiting mix-up
'The Queen’s Gambit' star admits she underestimated the physical toll of voice work
Anya Taylor-Joy is setting the record straight after a viral misunderstanding linked her on-set illness to her role as Princess Peach.
The actress, who voiced the iconic character in The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, revealed that it was not the project that led to her throwing up during a recording session — despite widespread assumptions.
Speaking to Entertainment Tonight, Taylor-Joy clarified, “I never said it was Princess Peach. I said it was the first time that I ever did voice acting.”
She went on to explain that the incident occurred during her very first voice-over experience, when she went into the session unprepared for its physical demands.
“I went in quite blind and I did it for eight straight hours — screaming and efforts and this and that,” she said.
The intense session, combined with excessive water intake, ultimately led to her feeling unwell.
“I drank so much water that I puked. So, I don’t do that anymore. I break it up and it’s helpful,” she added.
The Queen’s Gambit star has previously spoken about the unexpectedly taxing nature of voice acting, noting that constant shouting and vocal strain can take a toll on the body.
During an appearance on The Late Show with Seth Meyers, she admitted she hadn’t anticipated how physically demanding the process would be.
“I thought it would be really chill… and it wasn’t,” she said, recalling how she “threw up” after her first session.
While Taylor-Joy has yet to confirm which project the incident occurred on, her past voice work includes Playmobil: The Movie and The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance.
The actress added that the experience was a learning curve, prompting her to pace herself in future sessions — and avoid repeating the exhausting eight-hour marathon that led to the memorable mishap.
