Netflix cofounder Reed Hastings departs company

The cofounder of Netflix, Reed Hastings, will soon end his journey with the company he evolved from a DVD rental service into a major player in the streaming industry.

Hastings will not be looking for another term on Netflix's board and will leave the company by June, according to Netflix's announcement on Thursday during their first-quarter earnings release.

Having served as CEO until 2023, Hastings will now pivot to "charitable efforts and other activities," as stated by Netflix.

His philanthropic endeavors include donating $1.1 billion to the Silicon Valley Community Foundation and initiating the Hastings Initiative for AI and Humanity at Bowdoin College.

He has also been highly active in transforming the Utah ski resort Powder Mountain.

According to Forbes, Hastings has an estimated net worth of $5.8 billion.

"Reed laid the foundation of innovation, honesty, and exceptional performance that defines our identity today," Netflix expressed in their first-quarter report to shareholders.

"His foresight and leadership revolutionised global entertainment, leaving a lasting impact not only on us here at Netflix but also on audiences worldwide."

In the same document, Hastings noted that his "true impact at Netflix wasn't the result of any single choice."

"It centered around prioritising member satisfaction, fostering a culture for others to adopt and enhance, and creating a company that is cherished by members and achieves enduring success," Hastings communicated in the letter.

Hastings extended his appreciation to his successors, co-CEOs Greg Peters and Ted Sarandos, "whose dedication to Netflix's excellence assures me I can now explore new ventures."

Peters shared in the shareholders' letter that "Reed will forever be Netflix's founder and most ardent supporter," and remarked that "his vision, entrepreneurial spirit, and unwavering dedication to our principles have influenced every phase of our development, continuing to guide how Ted and I manage Netflix today."

Sarandos commented that Hastings "has demonstrated for Greg and me a selfless and focused leadership style that will continue to direct our approach in the exciting times ahead."
