Blackthorn Trust welcomes Royal Patron to mark four decades of community care

The Duchess of Gloucester visited the Blackthorn Trust Health and Community Hub in Maidstone on Tuesday to mark the charity’s 40th anniversary.

During the engagement, the 79-year-old Royal was received by the Lady Colgrain, His Majesty’s Lord-Lieutenant of Kent.

The visit focused on the organisation's long-standing commitment to supporting individuals with mental health conditions and chronic physical illnesses.

Her Royal Highness spent time at the hub meeting with service users currently enrolled in the Trust’s specialist six-month mental health support programme, as well as the dedicated staff and volunteers who facilitate the recovery process.

Reflecting on the milestone, the charity expressed its delight at hosting the Duchess, noting that the visit highlighted the vital work undertaken at the hub.

The Duchess toured the site's therapeutic workshops and gardens, hearing first-hand how the holistic environment assists in personal growth and development.

Emma Halpin, the charity's Chief Executive, remarked on the significance of Royal recognition during such a landmark year, stressing the value of compassionate care for those facing complex health challenges.

As a token of appreciation for her support, the Duchess was presented with a bespoke gift crafted within the Trust’s own workshops.

The handmade piece, created by stained glass leader Barbara Kavanagh and woodcraft leader Les Rist, represented the artistic and vocational skills fostered at the centre.

Following her time at Blackthorn, the Duchess continued her regional engagements by visiting Spadework Limited in West Malling, further underscoring her ongoing dedication to community-based health and social initiatives.
